In general, vacuum ports that are above the throttle plate are ported
vacuum.  Meaning of vacuum until the thottle is opened.  Also, the higher up
the carb the port is the later the vacuum starts.  For example the port for
the vacuum advance is usually lower than the egr port and will normally get
vacuum earlier.
These are generalations, but not having vacuum on a port on the carb can be
very normal.

Any time I set up an engine the dist vacuum comes from the carb base plate. If I run a spacer with a port in it that port is used for the pcv. Power brake vacuum comes directly off the manifold. of course that's a basic explanation. It would help if I knew more about your setup; carb, spacer, intake, accessories, distributor, etc.

Correct 428s are out there, you just have to look around, and be  patient.
 You may have only blown a piston, not broken the block. Take off the  
intake and heads and pan, and look inside, before you plan too far  ahead.

As mentioned by others, the distributor vacuum comes off of a tube on  the 
passenger side of the carb. Pull off the hose, and at idle, you should feel  
vacuum. Not as strong as the other, but it should be there, and able to be  
felt.
  Now, with the engine off, take this same hose (it might be a solid  metal 
tube, which makes this more difficult), and see if you can blow into the  
tube going to the distributor. You should not be able to, unless the rubber  
diaphragm is bad, then you can blow or suck. This is a fairly common failure 
of  the rubber in the advance unit. They are available at most parts stores.
  If there is no vacuum at all at the port on the side of the carb,  you 
will have to pull the carb and check for a blockage, internally. Soot,  burned 
oil residue, etc, can block the passage.

I bought the car off Ebay, and I knew I was taking a chance. Guy said there 
 was no rust---he lied. The car has rust in the floor board driver side, 
which is  the worst. I have a replacement panel for that. There is a couple of 
minor  holes in the back floors but they are easy. The trunk has rust, 
small section  and the rear quarters have been bondo'd over some holes. The 
front fenders look  okay. None of it's too bad and all pretty easy. The right 
door was rusted bad on  the bottom but bought a new rust free door for that. 
Have a new rust free core  support as well. Car was pretty much unmolested 
except for the crappy body work.  Chrome on interior needs to be redone as 
does aluminum interior parts. They are  not beat up and very restorable. 
Stainless is very good with almost no  dings.
Car was running when I got it but not too well. It had been sitting. It  
needs the front end redone but I have all the parts for that including correct 
 springs. Have all new rubber for top, which is in decent shape. 
 
Motor has cast iron shorty's on it. The tranny is a T-10 and is brand new.  
Had it done by a Hi Performance builder. Bill Heely completely rebuilt  the 
shifter including a replate of handle and new boots. I have purchased lots  
of new goodies as I found them. Car is down to the frame on the front but 
the  rest is together. All parts are in labeled tupperware bins and bags. 
Bumpers are  good.
 
It's a project for sure but very doable. Dummy me, didn't take any photos  
before disassembly but I have the Ebay photo plus all the photos I've been  
taking during the take-a-apart process. Have a file full of receipts.
 
I'm short on time and need to move this car.

I've been toying with the idea of dropping a modern diesel engine in my 65
Galaxie.  Specifically, there is a guy on craigslist where I live who has a
'99 with the following specs (from Wikipedia):

Engine 7.3 L Diesel V8
Years 1994-97
Power 235 hp (175 kW)
Torque 525 lb?ft (712 N?m)

I've got a 390 in the car now... I'm assuming that a 7.3L would fit space
wise.

Can anyone comment on how impossible this project would be?
Could I get away with the same transmission thats in the car now?

The transmission will not bolt up.FEs have their own bolt  pattern.
You would be better off to take the entire power train and computer  system.
Huge project. Anything can be made to work, if you have enough time and  
MONEY.

First off, I'd hardly call a diesel and upgrade. But that is my opinion 
after owning one. And no, it will not just fit into that Galaxie unless you 
do a sub frame chop.

Personally I'd say that the big diesels are probably too much for a Galaxie. There's a reason the diesel trucks are so big, you might want to look under the hood of one of those trucks very closely. There's coolers for everything stuffed everywhere, and a lot more than just the block and turbo hanging around. You may want to consider a smaller diesel from a car? 
Or
consider a diesel turbine, similiar to the one Jay Leno used in his newest project. just a thought.

I believe that you can use a 390 block with a 428 crank and get a 406, which is no slouch.  There are also truck blocks that are thicker casting that can be bored out to 4.13 without too much concern, the engine number would start with a 'D', as 360 blocks: D3TE, and D4TE.  Check an interchange manual to see.  original 428 blocks will cost you, but you might luck out with a truck block.

I'm pretty sure I've wrecked my '66 7Litre 428, when it blew I heard a racket coming from the engine (like something broke inside) it blew oil and coolant out the tail pipe and blew off the oil cap with a mixture of oil and coolant.

Assuming the engine can't be salvaged, what sort of replacement engines should I look at that won't break the bank and will give me the sort of power I had with the 428? If possible I don't want to go to a 390 - The original motor in this car was a 2V low compression 390.

I can send (mail) you a photo that was from the Ebay ad. It's not too  bad. 
I have photos of the disassembly process, however, the only photos that we  
had before that started were lost in computer melt down and like a nimrod, 
I  didn't back it up. The one decent photo I have of the car from Ebay 
really makes  the car look good---but that's kind of like lookin at a movie star. 
In real life  it didn't look that good. Don't get me wrong, it's all there 
and really hadn't  been molested other than some Bondo. It's all very 
doable, but is definitely a  project. I will lose my behind on it, but I have get 
rid of it.

390 with a 428 crank will give you 410 cid. I'm pretty sure all the FE  
blocks are the same. I've been looking at a lot of books on the FE lately and  
don't remember seeing that the truck blocks were different. I do show some  
differences in cranks and such. If I'm out of line on this, somebody please 
say  something. I just don't remember seeing a diff.

See below for a link to the 65 Registry. I sent in my 65 LTD numbers way back. You're suppose to get a reply. Never did. 
I think this is a dead registry. The 66 full size registry seems dead too. No updates for a long time. I realize it's an unpaid 
job to maintain these, so I am not to disappointed when they go "dead". 
Adrian does a fine job with the 67 registry last I knew. I sent him several numbers. He even paid me to send him the door 
tags. He wouldn't let me do it without reimbursement. Did he ever get his 67 428 / 4speed wagon fixed up?  ( courtesy of Lee Iacocca )

 He still has it as far as I know. I think he is leaving it as it is since its a rare piece of Ford history. I got a report on my '67 LTD from him earlier this year and sent him some #'s from some cars in the junkyards I visited.

unpacked completely because I read that it was for 63 galaxie.

See below for a link to the 65 Registry. I sent in my 65 LTD numbers way
back. You're suppose to get a reply. Never did. 

I think this is a dead registry. The 66 full size registry seems dead
too. No updates for a long time. I realize it's an unpaid 

job to maintain these, so I am not to disappointed when they go "dead". 

Adrian does a fine job with the 67 registry last I knew. I sent him
several numbers. He even paid me to send him the door 

tags. He wouldn't let me do it without reimbursement. Did he ever get
his 67 428 / 4speed wagon fixed up?  ( courtesy of Lee Iacocca )

 As far as your fit goes,, it depends on whether or not the 63 is a  box 
top or the fastback.
  The 63 1/2 fastback roofline is the same as the 64, but the earlier  63 
boxtop is different in the C pillar.

The 1966 Ford Full-Size Registry continues to collect data.? The website has in fact become inactive due to size limitations.? Since Nov of 2005 when the website reached its limits, I have collected approximately 1,300 additional entries and have over 4,000 pictures in the database.? I will never be able to add all the pictures and therefore must develop a different layout for the site.

The '65 registy was started by Robert Konig (from TX) but went dormant years ago. John Rotella may have taken it over or at least knows the status.

unpacked completely because I read that it was for 63 galaxie.

Hi everyone.

 

Has anyone had luck with replacement convertible top hoses for a 65 Galaxie?
I purchased and tried to install a pair from Dearborn Class (made by Scott
Drake under the label).  The top hose was too short to be properly braced to
the floor after installing so it does not interfere with the seat.  Even the
construction of the top hose is different from the original.  My original
top hose has an angle compression fitting 4 inches or so from the end brass
connector which helps keep the hose running along the cylinder as it moves.

 

Needless to say they are going back.  I was hoping someone could recommend a
shop that carries the correct size hoses for a full size ford.

When I first got my 68 XL, one hose had burst and sprayed oil all over the
back of the car. Then it was 'repaired' using compression fittings from a
hardware store. Of course it got soaked again, I don't know how many times.
Most of it was already dried and soaked into the carpet, and I was
determined not to let that happen again. I went to a local business I'd used
for oilfield parts and gave them the parts I had. The new hose was not going
to fail again in my lifetime. It doesn't show so I'm the only one that
knows, and I don't care. =)

? Before the repros became available, I made 2 sets, with parts I bought at NAPA.

? I took my old ones in, showed then what I needed, and bought enough plastic pressure tubing to make them.

? Basically, I used various brake line fittings and short pieces of flared brake line, and followed the original pattern.

? Standard brake line fitings screw right into the cylinders.

The connection at the pump was a larger brake line fitting, but again, right off the shelf.

? One thing that was a problem, was making the piece that comes directly off the cylinder just a little too long, and it hit the inner part of the armrests, when raising or lowering the top.

? It works, but you need to do some tube cutting and measuring.

? To reply to Dennis' post, regarding compresson fittings, I forgot to mention,, that is what I used in mine, inserting the inner sleeve of the compression fitting into the cut off ends of the brake lines, and I have had no problems, at all.

? I did use a tubing cutter, not a hack saw, for whatever that is worth.

Of course it got soaked again, I don't know how many times. Most of it was already dried and soaked into the carpet, and I was determined not to let that happen again. I went to a local business I'd used for oilfield parts and gave them the parts I had. The new hose was not going to fail again in my lifetime. It doesn't show so I'm the only one that knows, and I don't care. =)

Although I have no experience with convertible top hoses, I send Dennis' recommendation.  Around here, I'd just take what I have left of the original hose to Fluid Connector Products.  They make hoses while you wait, in whatever material you want (and believe me, there is quite a selection).

I used a pump and hoses from Autokrafters that I bought about five years
ago. It didn't have the elbow, but the hose was long enough to form a loop
and tie wrap to the cylinder. It fits nicely, and the hoses fit in the
clamps under/behind the seat.

The rollers are available from Autokrafters. It is a standard tube rivet,
and can be installed with what looks like a punch that you hit with a
hammer. The end of the punch is shaped so the rivet forms into a nice
mushroom. They cost about $70 at a tool store that carries riveting
supplies.

 

I tried using a very large hole punch, and while it looks ugly (not a nice
mushroom) seems to be fine.

Anybody have any experience with this problem.... turned the switch to shut down...nothing 

happened..motor kept running..alternator light came on and stayed on..oil light also on..turning 

the switch to different positions..nothing changed...motor still running..thought... lets go home 

and see what can be done..got half a block..spit through carb and died... alt and oil light still 

on...unscrewed the switch holder..dropped it down...nothing looked loose...put it back in.. 

called for tow....while waiting for tow still kept fiddling with the key...car started..lights off.. 

kept running..made it home fine..turned off as usual in the driveway..cancelled tow.. 



Anyone have any suggestions or experience? with this...makes me very leery of taking it 

anywhere...

? It is not a difficult replacement, however. You need to disconnect the battery.

??Unscrew the chrome ring that holds the switch in position, and pull the swtch assembly to the back, then down and out in your hand. Turn the key to the on position.

?Then, take a paper clip, and insert it in the hole, and this will release the key and tumblers from the switch.

? After obtaining a replacement switch, remove the nut from the back, that holds the wiring harness on to the switch, and remove it, and install the replacement.

? Re-assembly is then easy.

? Need a switch? I have more than a few, in scrapped out dash boards.

I vaguely remember something about the voltage regulator causing a problem

Hey guys,

I just recently had a similar problem with my 69 galaxie. When I  
bought the car I noticed a new voltage regulator had been put in, but  
didn't think anything of it. After a couple of months, my car was  
"randomly" shorting out or wouldn't turn off, and thought it was the  
ignition switch. Changing that helped the inability to shut it off,  
but while I was changing it noticed that the harness had literally  
melted down to a clump of plastic and was barely keeping the  
connections. It took forever to find a harness, but after replacing  
that(and rewiring the stereo so it didn't draw from one of those  
wires) everything seems to be back to normal.

Although I cannot pinpoint what exactly it was that caused everything  
to go haywire, I can say that I'm glad I replaced ALL those parts &  
can finally drive all around the state without worries of losing all  
power in the storrow drive tunnel again!

I have just acquired a 1966 T-Bird parts car. Other than the 428 & C-6, what parts will interchange with my '63 Galaxie XL? I've been told that the disc brakes will not easily swap. Correct? Any suggestions?

The T Bird 428 will need a different intake manifold. T Bird engines  mount 
flat in the car, ad have a flat intake where the carb mounts.
 It is possible it will have an angled spacer which can be removed  
otherwise, you will need an angles surface, so when the engine sits in the  
Galaxie, the carb mount is level.
