This 65 was brought to my attention by one of our Fordnatics.
  Although it is super nice, I believe it to be a clone.
  It has the VIN number of a Galaxie 500, (66)  not LTD,  (67).
  And, there are no stainless trim pieces around the gas and brake  pedals.
  These are extremely rare, and would have been on a 4 speed LTD,  but not 
a Galaxie 500.
  The floor under body is red primer and should be black.
  The new stainless exhaust exits behind the tire, not just in front  of 
the bumper, as it should
  Still, a super clean car, but probably overpriced.
The interior is certainly correct 65 LTD, and in very clean  condition.

Can you not buy them new, I priced one thru my local glass shop several
months ago and I think it was an astounding $600.00 then you have to buy a

a 65 thru 68 convertible or hardtop will work -- NOT the sedan or

is there an interchangeable number i can give them?  i believe i have  the 
11 1/32 x 2.25 f  and 11 1/32 x 2.5 r

hi all

 

i would have thought this was simple but not a parts house in the city has info.  

 

doing a brake job on my 1965 XL w/390 4 drum brakes.  the return spring busted, no one has a clue, nor even has a spring combi kit.

 

is there an interchangeable number i can give them?  i believe i have the 11 1/32 x 2.25 f  and 11 1/32 x 2.5 r

 

help, trying to finish this AM!

I work at ORiellys and pride myself on helping everyone especially those in the 60s and 70s. I also have customers with cars in the 50s and 40s that I help.

I currently have a 67 Ford LTD I have been able to find almost all of my parts with them.  The one that I had to order from the web was the turn signal wiring harness from the column.

I just got done rebuilding my brakes, 4 wheel drum, I replaced all rubber brake lines, wheel cylinders, hardware kits, Wagnor brake pads and master cylinder with power boost.  Not all the parts were on our shelf they were in the local warehouse that is only about 4 hours away when ordered.

 

I would gladly help you in anyway if you would like with part numbers for your local store or even call the store for you.  Remember I also said that parts can be found online.  The problem that parts people run into is that not all information was transferred to electronic databases after 1970.  Which means that some time I have to go to a book or two.  Giving them the Ford part number is the best way to go about getting the right part due to the auto makers not being as standardized as they are today.  If you need assistance in obtaining the Ford part numbers I can help there to.

 

Also know this that each AutoZone staff make all part time with the top management full time.

O?Reilly Auto Parts just purchase last year Checker Auto Parts, Schuck?s Auto Supply, Kragen Auto Parts and

Murray?s Discount Auto Stores which made us the number two store.

 

I am a fan of O?Reilly because I have been shopping there for the last 30 years and now after working for the company I am sold.  I go into the others AutoZone and Pepboys and those stores are discount auto parts with no help.  I first started with WesternAuto good company and great people.  Everything I like from a parts store and always enjoyed is what I demand from my employees.  I know not every store is the same and I do not know everything but I can research it and get back with you or punt and buy it from the car maker and under cut them.  Just to let you know we price match to Wal-Mart.   

 

For all those who took the time to read all that I wrote, thanks and if you could use some help finding a part let me know.

hi all

 

i would have thought this was simple but not a parts house in the city has info.  

 

doing a brake job on my 1965 XL w/390 4 drum brakes.  the return spring busted, no one has a clue, nor even has a spring combi kit.

 

is there an interchangeable number i can give them?  i believe i have the 11 1/32 x 2.25 f  and 11 1/32 x 2.5 r

 

help, trying to finish this AM!

He's saying that all counter help is part-time, and only the upper
management is full time. That's why we can't get good service at any parts
store, there's no incentive.

Has AutoZone changed in the past 10 years? While employed there from 1997-1999 I was a PSM ( parts sales manager ) at 2 
different Kansas stores. I called myself a shift manager. I worked the counter alot. I was usually scheduled close to 40 hours 
a week. Averaging about 39 hours a week at an hourly rate. I was asked to consider the assistant manage position twice. 
They work 50 hours week for a set salary. Sadly, their way of calculating your new "salary" was pathetic and I would've been 
earning less per hour. So I declined. At that time there was some part time counter help. Their automotive skill varied. No one 
was an expert. Not even I. But I tried to help the customer until my resources were exhausted. We did have a few full time 
counter help people that worked close to 40 hours like myself. Maybe that has changed over the years. I shop at either O'Reillys 
and AutoZone nowadays. NAPA is too high around here. I do prefer AZ due to their reward program.

Sorry.  About the typing still recovering from surgery.

 

I talked with a good friend that works at AZ and that is where I got my info.  A lot with them has changed and not for the better.  Right now our store gets more referrals from the AZ down the road that any other place. I know that a lot of the manufactures that all the part stores sell are good but I lost a lot of faith in the AZ here when I had to buy a starter a few years back for my truck.  It was junk.

I know that there are a few parts that I would not install from O?Reillys on my car also but those are the lesser brands we sell.  All in all the aftermarket parts are good and sometimes will last longer than the original ones.

You've got the sizes reversed.  The fronts are 2.50 wide, rears are  2.25.  
By the way, it's quite easy to upgrade your drum brakes.  
if you get station wagon front backing plates and drums (might as well get  
the hardware and shoes too if you purchase from a wrecking yard.  Hesitant  
about reusing the shoes?  When you purchase relined shoes you'll need cores 
 or pay the core charge).  All these parts will bolt on to your 65 up  
Galaxie if from a 65 up drum wagon.  They are 3 inches wide instead of  2.5.  
For the rear there are 2.5 inch wide setups to replace your 2.25 but  some 
searching required.  Get backing plates and drums plus hardware and  shoes.  
Beware there are 2 different bolt patterns and bolt sizes where the  backing 
plates attach to rear axle housing.  In general, only the largest  engines 
and stick transmission got the larger bolts and bolt pattern as the axle  
bearings were larger.  Specifically on 65 Galaxie all auto trans cars got  small 
pattern, small bolts.  390 & 427 stick shift got large bolts and  bolt 
pattern.  Later years can be used but likely all 428 and 429 cars,  even w auto 
trans, got big bolts, big pattern.
On my two 65 Galaxies I've carefully laid out and then using a drill press  
drilled ventilation holes in backing plates and formed forward-facing 
scoops  from sheet aluminum which are attached with pop rivets.  When my shoes 
are  worn out I'll seek out a reliner who can supply Velvetouch metallic 
relined  shoes.  Should be able to find a supplier in a major city yellow pages  
under "brake and clutch rebuilders".  I'm pretty sure there is one in the  
Seattle Wash. area.  I've got previous experience with these shoes on my  '54 
Ford and '63 Chevy II.  The hotter you get them the better they  stop.  
Combine all ideas above and you can have pretty amazing braking  power.  By the 
way, none of these cars are equipped with Power  Brakes.

i bought replacement sunvisor brackets at Dearborn Classics.  they are  a 
great source.  the piece attaches to the windshield frame and the visor  
attaches to it.  if that swivel piece is what you want then check Dearborn  out.

Those pieces are NOT reproduced, and yes, they are die-cast. Get  them 
rechromed, and you can replace the sun visor swivels for $20 for the pair.  
Dearborn Classics has the swivels.

Hello all: 

Looking for suggestion on tricks to install hard fuel line in 66 convertible. I'm guessing take that rear tire off, but do I have to remove anything else? Looks tough in a garage on jack stands, but any ideas would be cool. Also the car currently has soft lines from tank all the way up to the front, was that stock, or did someone add that later?

Those pieces are NOT reproduced, and yes, they are die-cast. Get them 
rechromed, and you can replace the sun visor swivels for $20 for the pair. 
Dearborn Classics has the swivels.

  The original fuel line in a 66 was plastic. Not my favorite for fuel, but that is what it was.
  I replaced mine with reinforced rubber fuel line. Much easier than the metal.
  You can also use the larger brake line stock for fuel It takes two lengths, with a coupler in the center.
  The flare at the tank end and the engine compartment end will need to be cut off with a tubing cutter.

  Do I understand that you never had the original pieces? Or are they too far gone to rechrome?
  No one is ever going to reproduce those. Good used is your only option. NOS has to be very scarce.
  I have never seen any available. Hardtops had aluminum trim there. Sedans had painted steel.
  Only the convertibles had chromed steel.
  I might have an extra of the top inside center piece at home, but won't be there until late Sunday.

We are going to replace the windshield. We are looking for the interior chrome trim pieces that surround the windshield. I do not know what each specific piece is called. I have seen "inner top windshield trim" for the top  piece. And pillar - something for the side pieces.

I'm having some emblems re-chromed. I know reproduction inserts exist for the hood and trunk emblems. What about for the "390" fender emblems? There seems to not be any reproductions for 1965. Is there a way to remove the insert without damaging it, polish/refinish it, and reapply after the emblem has been restored?

...we have a 65 500 convertible and there are several/many/sites with the "emblems"....including the 390 which is what we have too.

With a computer and Internet connection -searching for 65's brings up lots of sites. They are out there, I saw them these past two weeks when I was searching for the windshield surround pieces for our convertible.

I took note that the 390 was out there simply because that is what we have. Just takes time to search but the Galaxie group does a lot to help out.

Thanks. I've looked a lot, and what I find are pictures only, or poor to good quality used. I have the emblems already, I want perfect or near perfect ones. I've never seen a near perfect set. Every other year but 1965. Thats why I'm looking at re-plating mine.

Can you give more details on the cause of your letters evaporating? Was it a mistake the shop made? Included in my parts to refinish are a set of ultra rare Galaxie 500 XL fender scripts. I expect it could be a couple thousand dollars to replace those if they "evaporate."

I wouldn't send any of this stuff just anywhere. For pot metal, send 
to QUALKROM.com
HE knows what he is doing and will give a lifetime warranty with his work.

BUT it may cost more than just any place. So you can gamble and maybe 
loose it no matter what it costs, or send it to the right guy the first time.
As for bumpers? Me...Born Again Classics. Lifetime warranty and about 
1/2 what I see some places doing them for. Or you can save $100 and 
get a 1 year warranty from the Bumper Boyz...

  I have never seen the 390 emblem insert reproduced. It is the same stiff aluminum with sticky back material as the replacement inserts for the hood and trunk. I seriously doubt you will get the red 390 piece out, without damaging it.
  Although it is thicker than household aluminum foil, it is still fragile.
  NOS replacements are still around, with various vendors, but they are about $125 each. Maybe more.
  I know Len Hull in Jackson MI usually has a few. Len always has the good stuff, and charges accordingly!

  You can get 62-64. and 66-67, and 68,  but they are all different from the 65s.

  As mentioned on the "twisted pair" list, the engine emblems for 65 Galaxies are not reproduced. There are NOS out there, for $125 each or more. Len Hull in Jackson MI sometimes has them. He has top quality NOS parts, and charges accordingly.
  I doubt you can remove the red aluminum 390 inserts without damaging them. They are thin, with a sticky back, and have been baked on for over 45 years!

Has anyone ever install the Monroe shock with the coil over on the front or
rear and did you like them?

 

I have a 67 LTD 2 door and I just replaced all the 4 coils and front shocks
with the sense-tracs.

 

My rear coils are the combo ones?  Currently I have air shocks and not sure
that I like them.

I had some coil over Monroe's on my '64 back in the mid eighties - may not even compare to today's, but felt the ride was still too sloppy.  The Gas-a-just from KYB made all the difference in the world.  Unfortunately, they no longer make the Gas-a-just for '61-'64 rears, but think they're still available for the '67...

I have never liked coil over/assist shocks. They put extra strain on  the 
shock mounts.
If you have new springs,you certainly do not need them.

O?Reilly Auto Parts just purchase last year Checker Auto Parts, Schuck?s Auto Supply, Kragen Auto Parts and

Murray?s Discount Auto Stores which made us the number two store.

 

I am a fan of O?Reilly because I have been shopping there for the last 30 years and now after working for the company I am sold.  I go into the others AutoZone and Pepboys and those stores are discount auto parts with no help.  I first started with WesternAuto good company and great people.  Everything I like from a parts store and always enjoyed is what I demand from my employees.  I know not every store is the same and I do not know everything but I can research it and get back with you or punt and buy it from the car maker and under cut them.  Just to let you know we price match to Wal-Mart.

I work at ORiellys and pride myself on helping everyone especially those in the 60s and 70s. I also have customers with cars in the 50s and 40s that I help.

I currently have a 67 Ford LTD I have been able to find almost all of my parts with them.  The one that I had to order from the web was the turn signal wiring harness from the column.

I just got done rebuilding my brakes, 4 wheel drum, I replaced all rubber brake lines, wheel cylinders, hardware kits, Wagnor brake pads and master cylinder with power boost.  Not all the parts were on our shelf they were in the local warehouse that is only about 4 hours away when ordered.

 

I would gladly help you in anyway if you would like with part numbers for your local store or even call the store for you.  Remember I also said that parts can be found online.  The problem that parts people run into is that not all information was transferred to electronic databases after 1970.  Which means that some time I have to go to a book or two.  Giving them the Ford part number is the best way to go about getting the right part due to the auto makers not being as standardized as they are today.  If you need assistance in obtaining the Ford part numbers I can help there to.

 

Also know this that each AutoZone staff make all part time with the top management full time.

i would have thought this was simple but not a parts house in the city has info.  

 

doing a brake job on my 1965 XL w/390 4 drum brakes.  the return spring busted, no one has a clue, nor even has a spring combi kit.

 

is there an interchangeable number i can give them?  i believe i have the 11 1/32 x 2.25 f  and 11 1/32 x 2.5 r

thanks  to all for the help.  all the 'big local' boys could produce 
nothing, but  we were able to find at a kragen.  thanks, i knew it was simple but

hi  all
 

 
i  would have thought this was simple but not a parts house in the city has 
 info.  
 

 
doing  a brake job on my 1965 XL w/390 4 drum brakes.  the return spring  
busted, no one has a clue, nor even has a spring combi  kit.
 

 
is  there an interchangeable number i can give them?  i believe i have the  
11 1/32 x 2.25 f  and 11 1/32 x 2.5 r
 

 
help,  trying to finish this AM!
