overtighten. On pre-65's it's not as crucial, but on later models I
believe the housings are cast steel which can snap if overtightened...10-15 ft
lbs. maybe? check manual.</DIV>

<DIV> Clean all surfaces of old gasket. Install the stat in the housing
with the sensor end towards the engine, using a small amount of RTV to hold it
in place. Install the gasket, if you are using one, on the engine outlet,
using RTV, then mount the stat housing to the engine.</DIV>
<DIV>Let the RTV set up for at least an hour or two, before filling with
coolant. The longer the better.</DIV>

want to make sure it's done right without any surprises. I have the 'stat
and gasket and a general assortment of engine sealers. Advice on methods,
sealers and whatever I need to know is greatly appreciated. I know, I should
look at the repair manual, and I will, but advice via personal experience is
best in my opinion.
